There also is the involvement of Saraswati (Jaya Prada) who loves Ganga. Jamuna reaches the home of Shankar (Mithun Chakraborty) who fell in love with her the first time he saw her during one of his qawaali programmes. Ganga gets hold of his child but cannot find Jamuna. A blast takes place at the bridge and Jamuna and their child fall into the river. When he returns, Thakur sends his person to kill him. I highly disliked it and found it quite pathetic.There is a belief in India that the rivers Gangaa, Jamunaa and Saraswathi our holy and pious, and their unique merger, is popularly known as "Sangam". Fans of this sort of movies would probably enjoy it, since it's a movie which requires no brain and is not to be taken seriously. Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi was his final offering as a director.
Manmohan Desai has had a prolific career, and I quite enjoyed some of his movies. Nirupa Roy is the typical suffering mother, and Amrish Puri is the typical cruel villain. Jaya Pradha, as the golden-hearted prostitute, and Meenakshi Sheshadri, as the vivacious gypsy, are pretty. Mithun Chakraborty is given a role of minimal substance, and well, he too is okay. In terms of acting he does an okay job, still considering the film's poor writing. Bachchan is terribly miscast simply because he looks too old for the part. The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan as Ganga. They all were ridiculous and unintentionally funny. I'm talking about the overly silly proceedings with almost every character going superhuman and supernatural, and the moments of lucky coincidence, which Manmohan Desai is so famous for. At times the movie was really unbearable, but it had its moments from time to time, though they still did not make it a worthy watch. The action sequences were, as expected, very overdone, and so was everything else in the movie, which was totally melodramatic, often for no reason. Technically the movie is also very bad, though that was the case with most Hindi movies of its sort at that time. The story of the film is very corny and almost every plot element looks familiar, forced and predictable, and is based on impossible coincidences. The movie follows, cliché after cliché, the stories of its main characters, Ganga, Jamuna, Shankar (who is for some reason omitted from the title) and Saraswathi. Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi is an awful film.
